SANDY, Utah (ABC4 Sports) – All these red cards has Mike Petke seeing red.
Damir Kreilach received a straight red in the 17th minute after head-butting Carlos Grueza, and RSL gave up three goals with just ten men on the field in a 4-2 loss to FC Dallas Saturday night.
Last week, Justin Portillo received a red card in the 84th minute, and LAFC capitalized with the game-winning goal in the 92nd minute.
So did Petke have any advice for his team after another straight red was issued?
“Yeah, don’t get red cards, simple as that,“ Petke said. “How do you discuss that, you know? I mean, I played. There’s passion that goes into it. I’ve said it for 20 years now. Players aren’t robots. Is there anything they can do? Yes. Control their emotions. But this is coming from a coach who has never controlled his emotions once in 43 years on this earth. So maybe it’s my fault, maybe my vibe to them, my intensity. I don’t know. I’m not faulting them. It is what it is.“
Gruezo opened the scoring in the first minute with a goal to make it 1-0. Then in the 17th minute, Kreilach was kicked in the groin while laying on the ground by Gruezo. Kreilach got up and lightly head-butted Gruezo, who crumpled to the turf. The referee pulled out the red, and RSL had to play the rest of the way a man down.
But Jefferson Savarino found the equalizer in the 31st minute with a laser shot past Dallas goalkeeper Jose Luiz Gonzalez to make it 1-1.
But FC Dallas countered just a minute later when Paxton Pomykal took a ball off defender Marcelo Silva, who blasted it past Nick Rimando to make it 2-1 at the half.
Pomykal scored his second goal of the night in the 64th minute when his shot deflected off of RSL defender Needum Onuoha’s backside for a 3-1 advantage.
But RSL didn’t quit. Just two minutes later, Marcelo Silva headed in his first career MLS goal off a corner kick from Albert Rusnak to cut the deficit to 3-2.
But in the 69th minute, Jesus Ferreira put it out of reach with Dallas’ fourth goal of the night.
FC Dallas outshot Real Salt Lake on the night, 12-7.
RSL falls to 1-3-1 on the season. They next play at Seattle Saturday at 8:00 p.m.
