CLEVELAND, Va (WJHL) –  Crews confirm the five men who were trapped inside a Southwest Virginia cave have been rescued.

One person is being med-flighted out to a local hospital.

Powers says six men entered Cyclops Cave on Saturday with the intention to camp. One man was able to escape and call 911.

Russell County EMA Director Jess Powers tells Nexstar-affiliate WJHL the men are between the ages of 34 to 59 years old and are suffering from hypothermia and fatigue.

Heavy rain had reportedly saturated the cave, making it hard for the men to exit on their own. Two of the men are mildly hypothermic, according to reports.

WJHL has confirmed this is a private property. They spoke to owner Frankie Smith who said this is the first time someone has gotten stuck in the cave and that the men did not have permission to enter. Smith said the cave is about two miles long.

Governor Ralph Northam commended those responsible for bringing everyone to safety Sunday evening.

“I’m happy to report that all individuals have been safely rescued from the cave in Cleveland, Virginia. Sending my deepest gratitude to the first responders, VDEM and search and rescue personnel who helped get them to safety.”
