SANDY, Utah (ABC4 Sports) – The United States Women’s National Team loves playing in Utah.
The #1 team in the world improved to 6-0 all-time in Utah, and ran its unbeaten streak to 15 overall with a 1-0 victory over China in front of 13,250 fans at Rio Tinto Stadium.
Alex Morgan scored her 86th career goal in the 57th minute, while Alyssa Naeher made two saves for the shutout.
“We love playing here,” said head coach Jill Lewis. “I think it’s a great surface, and I’m a bit of a surface snob. I think this is a really nice surface to play on. I said to the team at halftime that we need to be a little bit more proactive in our game and I think that brings the crowd into it.”
Megan Rapinoe served up a perfect cross on a free kick, which Morgan headed in for her sixth goal in seven games with the national team this season.
“95 percent of the time, it’s going to be an amazing cross in,” Morgan said about Rapinoe’s pass. “So that takes a little bit of pressure off of us knowing that it’s going to be a great service every single time.”
Two Utah Royals players saw time on their home turf. Becky Sauerbrunn played the entire first half, while Amy Rodriguez came into the game in the 76th minute in her first national team action since undergoing knee surgery
“Gosh it’s so fun to play with this team,” Rodriguez said. “I’ve obviously been out a year with my ACL tear and it’s just so nice to be back on the pitch again, wearing the red white and blue, supporting my team.”
The U.S. will take on China again June 12th in Cleveland.
