Advice from a centenarian? ‘Do it while you can’

News

OREM, Utah (Good4Utah)- Born in 1917, Verda Watkins has seen a lot. 36,525 days to be exact. Her advice to the rest of us? “Do it now—while you have good eyesight.”

The Seville Retirement Community in Orem gathered Saturday to celebrate Verda’s 100th birthday which was on Mother’s Day.

Verda married the love of her life Roy back in 1943. They have one son, seven grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Their only son Carl is 72. He says his mom is a strong fighter but is slowly getting older.

“You know the effects of age do weigh on you,” he said. “She’s lost her vision. She got Macular Degeneration back in the 80’s.”

That’s where Verda’s advice to us comes in—“Do it now,” she said, “while you have the good eyesight.”

“Do all the things you like to do…do it now; while you can.”

Verda will be honored by Gov. Gary Herbert later this summer during a special luncheon for all of Utah’s centenarians.
