6 steps to take right after a car accident

News

Attorney Craig Swapp joined Midday with tips on what to do after a car accident.  He recommends the following six steps.

Step 1: Assess if anyone has injuries.  The first thing to do is make sure that you, and everyone else in the car, along with the driver and passengers of the other car are physically ok.

Step 2: Immediately contact the proper authorities.  Call 911.  A dispatcher will send am ambulance if needed and will also contact send the police to investigate and file an accident report.  This will help you in the long term, especially if there’s a personal injury lawsuit down the road.

Step 3: Document the accident. Take pictures or video, record your account and find witnesses.

Step 4: With any injury, get checked by a medical professional.  Serious injuries require a trip to the emergency room, however many accident injuries show up a day or two later.  If that happens, see your primary care physician or insta-care immediately.

Step 5: Report your accident to your insurance company.  This will begin the claims process.

Step 6: Retain an attorney if you or your passengers are injured.  From medical bills to lost income, you will need a fair settlement from the insurance company.  Craig Swapp & Associates can monitor your case and medical recovery to ensure a stronger likelihood of a full and fair settlement.
