AMERICAN FORK, Utah (ABC4 UTAH) – American Fork Police Department responded to a call that a 4-year-old had been injured by a lawn mower. The incident happened just after 1:00PM on Monday.
The girl was riding on the lawnmower with her grandmother when she fell off. The lawn mower ran over her right leg. Her leg was severed at her ankle. It also caused lacerations all along the back of her leg up to her buttocks.
Sonrisa Hasselbach was one of the neighbors who rushed to help after the accident. She was amazed at how many people were in the right spot to help.
“It was amazing to see like people show up at the exact moment and to me that’s a miracle,” said Hasselbach.
Hasselbach helped stop the bleeding until medical crews could arrive. The little girl was taken to American Fork Hospital where she was stabilized. She was then taken by medical helicopter to Primary Children’s Hospital.
Police don’t know how the girl fell off the mower, but they said the grandmother was distraught over the accident.
“We don’t know if she was on her lap or standing on the side we don’t know that information. We may never know. The grandmother is just beside herself. She’s to the point we can’t interview her right now she’s just so emotional.”
Neighbors like Hasselbach said the grandmother of the little girl was a caring neighbor. In fact, the lawn she was mowing was for a neighbor who is out of town.
“We love her so much she is constantly helping everyone out in this neighborhood,” said Hasselbach. “To have something like this happen to her it just breaks my heart as well as everybody.”
