3 Things You Need To Know About Gardening in 2016

News
You don’t need a green thumb to grow a rockin’ garden.

Elana Johnson with Home Depot joined Midday with tips to bring your garden back to life this spring.  A successful garden starts with selecting the right plants, irrigation, and soil for where you live and having the tools on had to keep your yard healthy all season long.

1. Pick the right plants, flowers, and edibles for Utah.

Annuals, such as petunias and geraniums, grow all season long and must be replanted each year. Perennials, such as daylilies and daisies, continue to bloom and thrive year after year without the need for annual replanting. These should be placed in flower beds and along  borders for color that lasts the whole growing season.

Drop N’ Bloom plants are ideal for any region. Just place in your favorite plants in a container or in the ground and watch them bloom.

2. Get smart about watering, use tools to make watering simple and efficient, and keep your garden lovely all season.

Technology is available to help make caring for your garden easier than ever.  Sensors notify your smart phone when your plants need water. There is also a monitor for soil moisture for indoor and outdoor plants and calibrate the watering needs based on a catalog of over 50,000 plants.  The solar-powered Edyn Garden System continuously monitors the condition of your garden for moisture, nutrients, local weather and other factors. It automatically controls your existing irrigation system and will even make recommendations on the best types of plants to use. Drip irrigation kits are another option.

3. Creating a good environment for plants involves the right soils and fertilizers.

A healthy garden begins with the right soil. Use organic soil like Organic Potting Mix or Soil for planting in a container garden or raised garden bed. Add compost to enrich soil and nourish vegetables, herbs and fruits as they grow. Select only organic compost or compost labeled for vegetable garden use, like Nature’s Care Organic Compost. You should also use the Mulch and Top Soil Calculator to make sure you are getting the right ammount.
