18 Year Old Wounded In Car To Car Shooting On State Route 201

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4 Utah News) – A teenager is wounded and police are looking for the suspects after a car to car shooting Tuesday afternoon on State Route 201.

Sergeant Robert Wilkinson of the Utah Highway Patrol said that a Chevy Trail Blazer was traveling westbound in the left lane at 3200 West around 4:30 pm Tuesday when a car pulled up alongside in the emergency lane and opened fire, striking the 18 year old male driver of the Chevy.

“This vehicle that you see behind me, the SUV crashed into another car currently located on 201,” Sgt. Wilkinson said. “There were no injuries there in the crash but the SUV continued through the fence and ended up here on the north Frontage Road of 201.”

That driver is listed in serious condition in a local hospital. His 15 year old passenger was unhurt. Sgt. Wilkinson calls it a gang shooting.

“We have reports that some of these individuals may be associated with a gang,” Sgt. Wilkinson told reporters.

The suspects are reported to be a group of individuals in a red or maroon passenger car, possibly a Mazda or a Honda. Fortunately no other vehicles – or other people – were struck by the rounds that were fired.

“If you think about it how the vehicles were traveling in the very far left lane and the suspect vehicle that came up on the left side and shot at and through the car, potentially through the car,” Sgt. Wilkinson said. “There were two other lanes and businesses here that those bullets could have passed through, hurt somebody else.”

On Tuesday evening, the Salt Lake City, West Valley City and Salt Lake Unified Police departments were looking for those suspects and their car.

Salt Lake City Police are asking anyone who saw the incident or that suspect car to give them a call.
