ROY CITY, Utah (ABC4 Utah) – A 16-year-old girl is facing two counts of murder after an early morning crash.
It happened in Roy City just after midnight at the intersection of 6000 South 3500 West.
“It’s alleged that this vehicle was seen damaging some property in Syracuse City and then when that vehicle came into Roy, just prior to getting into Roy, [a Clinton Police Officer] located the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop,” said Officer Matthew Gwynn with the Roy City Police Department.
Clinton Police said they got a tip for a white SUV around midnight that caused property damage in Syracuse.
Ofc. Gwynn adds, “I’m being told there was a trash can underneath or  being dragged. There was a trash can attached to the vehicle somehow.”
A Clinton Police Officer would spot the SUV near the boarder of Clinton and Roy City.  The officer and try and make a traffic stop on 3500 West but the 16-year-old girl would speed up.
Clinton Police would tell Good4Utah their officer watched the SUV crash into this car.
“It appears initially they were rear ended and that vehicle then struck the traffic light behind us,” said Ofc. Gwynn.
Roy City Police is the lead agency in this investigation. Detectives said inside the car was a 20-year-old driver Maddison Haan of West Point and 19-year-old passenger Tyler Christianson.  One would die on scene and the other at an area hospital.
The force of the impact caused the traffic light to come off of the pole at the intersection of 6000 South.
“The SUV continued northbound, it appears still at a high rate of speed, traveled through some yards, uprooted some fences, hit a parked car in a driveway and a horse trailer and then came to a rest in a field,” the officer added.
Police believe the girl was in a family vehicle.  Officers think the girl also crashed caused parked wagon and caused it to crash into the side of a garage.
Police said the teen would then get out of the SUV and run. Officers would catch her at the WinCo Foods parking lot.
“The driver of the SUV was a [16]-year-old female. She is currently in custody and she is speaking with our investigators.
The teenager is facing two counts of murder.
Police won’t be releasing the name of the 16-year-old because she is a minor.
It’s unclear if alcohol or drugs played a role in this crash.
