SALT LAKE CITY, UT (GOOD4UTAH) – Detective Cody Lougy says, Salt Lake City police were alerted initially to a four car crash around 1:00PM on Friday.
This was at the intersection of 2700 South 300 West. The suspect, who was driving a white Subaru, then crossed the street and carjacked another vehicle.
The completely disabled Subaru was taken into custody, at the time, by Unified Police Department, because it was involved in a robbery case. This suspect, initially described only as a black male of unknown age with a shaved head, struck several parked vehicles and a telephone pole after the initial crash.
In about nine minutes, police and witnesses say, he damaged twelve vehicles. His motivations were unknown, he was not being chased at the time of these crashes. Police speculate he may have been pursued by someone else or that he may have been under the influence of drugs, but his intentions remain a mystery.
Witness and Manager at Tire World, Keith Brown, says that he is just grateful that no one was injured. He tells us that rumor is that the perpetrator had a gun. He says that, “cars are just objects,” and that the important thing is that no people were hurt. Police confirm that no injuries were reported.
Mr. Brown also told Good4Utah news that the noise was loud enough from the crash, that he thought a car had actually hit the building. His personal car was one of the vehicles damaged in the crime spree.
Police say the suspect fled the area southbound on I-15.
This suspect is still at large, he is considered by police to be armed and dangerous and is connected with a sting of other violent crimes, stick with GOOD4UTAH news for updates as this story develops.
