Broadview University offers an Associate’s degree in Veterinary Technology. It is a 2 year program where the students learn how to properly restrain cats and dogs, how to use a muzzle, walking them on a leash, behavior, grooming, etc.

Next, the students begin to learn about diagnostic testing that will be performed in the veterinary hospital. They learn how to draw blood, collect urine, examine under the microscope and proper documentation using medical terminology.

The student’s get hands on practice, working with live animals. Broadview has mutual agreements with local shelters, every week cats and dogs are brought to the campus and the students get to practice restraint, draw blood, vaccinate, microchip and assist with the doctor on surgical procedures. It’s also very beneficial for the animal because of all we provide for them, it makes them more adoptable.

A big part of being a veterinary technician is taking radiographs, displayed is a leg model used to practice taking radiographs and bandaging, for the large animal class, the students get to take radiographs on a large animals limb(s). There is a class just for radiology since it’s a big part of a technician’s career.

The students will also learn about the anatomy of the cat, dog, horse and other large animals as well, there is an anatomy class the students take.

The surgery and anesthesia class is where the students work side by side with our resident veterinarian in surgery. The students get to place IV catheters in the animals and monitor them under anesthesia and scrub in on a surgery.

After the surgery class, the students take a class specifically for dentistry for cats and dogs. Dentistry is a huge part of veterinary medicine as well, since animals don’t brush their teeth like humans, it’s important that owners are educated on how to do so by brushing, giving treats and having regular dental cleanings at their veterinary hospital.

The curriculum is mostly small animal, your cats and dogs, but the students do need to know about exotic animals like rabbits, rats and mice. They can take a lab animal and exotics class for that. And there is a large animal class where the students get to go out in the field and work one on one with animals like horses.
