The Safe Internet for Utah Kids Campaign runs September 14 – December 1. and was made possible by a generous grant from the Sorenson Foundation. The purpose of this campaign is to raise awareness as to why kids are entitled to special protections and to let the legislature know this issue is a priority to Utah. Dr. Jennifer Brown the director of the Safe Internet for Utah Kids Campaign explains more.
Dr Brown has worked on this issue for eight years and has passed five pieces of legislation with Sen. Weiler, including declaring pornography to be a public health crisis.
The campaign focuses on science and why the developing brain is different and more vulnerable than an adult brain. She collaborated with Dr. Jon Wisco, a neuroanatomist, on a paper detailing this. In the paper they discuss five main reasons why kids are more sensitive to sexually explicit material.
Dr Brown believes it’s important to talk about cell phones and specific ways to put protections on them because that is where most kids access inappropriate material.
