One in five Utahns have lost money! Whether it’s old refunds, overpaid bills, forgotten accounts or neglected deposits, when businesses owe you money. When businesses can’t find you, they turn those funds over to the State. Each year, millions of dollars in bank accounts, stock certificates, insurance checks, bonds and dividends find their way to the State of Utah because the owners cannot be located. In fact, one in five Utahns have money, and most don’t even know it.

The mission of the Unclaimed Property Division is to return that money to its rightful owners. David Damschen, Utah State Treasurer stopped by Good Things Utah to show how you can claim your cash!

It’s easy! Just head to mycash.utah.gov. Type in your name (or check for friends and family!) and search. You can also call 801-715-3300. There is no catch, this is a government program that people love. It is an authentic program to return money to its rightful owner.

According to Damschen, this year, the State of Utah received another $54.8 in lost money! So, it’s a good idea to check every year even if you’ve checked in the past. Also, just over 1/3 of the dollars paid out each year go to businesses. So, make sure to check your business or a previous business.
