Southern Sweet Potato Pie

Liz Kuhni is here from Sweetiepiez to show us how to make a Sweet Potato Pie and how to decorate your Thanksgiving pies this holiday season! 

Southern Sweet Potato Pie

  • 2 to 3 medium-large sweet potatoes, 1 ½ lbs, cooked and skinned
  • 9 inch pie shell
  • 2 T unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/3 c packed dark brown sugar
  • 3 T sorghum
  • ¾ t ground cinnamon
  • ½ t freshly grated nutmeg
  • 3 eggs
  • ½ c heavy cream

Oven 350.  Whisk sweet potatoes and melted butter together.  Gradually whisk in the brown sugar.  Add the sorghum, cinnamon, and nutmeg: mix well.  Whisk in the eggs, one at a time, mixing well and scraping down the sides of the bowl between additions.  Blend in the cream.  Scrape the sweet potatoe filling into the pie crust.  Bake for 45-50 minutes or until the edges are puffed and the center is almost firm but still flat.  Let cool completely.  Garnish with whip cream.
