Research estimates 58%- 94% of victims seek help from family and friends. That gives everyone a responsibility to help victims come forward, recover and heal. It is important for both survivors and community members to understand how to respond when you or someone you know goes through the recovery process.

Erin Shepard, a counselor at Yarrow Therapy, shared some things that you need to be aware of when a survivor is recovering.

When a survivor receives a negative reaction from a friend or family member, research concludes that individual is more likely to develop Post Traumatic Stress, which leads to having delayed recovery and self blame.

Typically, no one is prepared for what to say or how to handle the weight of that information. But, if you handle the information in a positive way it helps them tremendously. 

Remember to always tell them, “you matter” validating them and saying that they are worth it is crucial in the first couple of months after the rape.

Think about their physical well being- report the rape to a medical professional.

And finally, the most important thing is to always show support and let them know that you are always their to talk to them if they need to.
