Dr. Mike Olpin, the President of Stress Management Place, and Professor of Health Promotion at Weber State University, joined Nicea to talk about the problem with increased stress in students and parents.
Dr. Olpin says stress levels are higher than ever. It’s present in all ages. He says theories for what causes stress can include feeling out of control in what’s happening.
Dr. Olpin says he believes the biggest misconceptions about stress is that you can’t do anything about it or that you have no control. He says there are three things that need to happen in order to feel less stress.
- Have a clear understanding of how the stress response works. Stress doesn’t just happen. It’s how you think about things.
- Have a way of turning off stress.
- Find an approach that will teach you how to prevent stress, because Dr. Olpin says it is preventable.
He believes a big and common stressor, is not knowing what’s coming next, and the belief that it’s going to be bad. This results in activation of physiology like, “there’s a bear!” There’s not a bear like there was for our ancestors, but the response is the same.
In order to help kids prevent stress and better handle stress, Dr. Olpin says parents need to be the models. Train yourself to know how to handle stressful situations. Tell them they will be OK and that they will be safe.
Dr. Olpin has a special, free offer for Good Things Utah viewers. He is giving away a free MP3 of his guided Power Nap. To get your download, just fill out the form below and he will send you an email so you can download it. This free download is only available for a limited time.
