Devon is very excited to be a Utahn after a long journey that’s landed him here in the Beehive State. His travels began after leaving his home town in Western Illinois (not far from the Mormon settlement of Nauvoo, IL), Macomb to Tulsa, OK where he landed his first television job while still in college. After finishing his degree with a B.S. in meteorology and minor in mathematics, he moved to Little Rock, AR to be the weekend meteorologist for KATV. He then moved to Las Vegas, NV working for KVVU Fox5 which transferred him to Kansas City, MO working for KCTV5 where he met his wife Surae Chinn.
Surae convinced him to move back to where she grew up in Washington, D.C. where Devon eventually landed a spot on the cable affiliate of ABC7 – WJLA at News Channel 8. While at News Channel 8/ABC7, he had the opportunity of a life time to fill in for Good Morning America Weekend in New York City. Within the past year, he was promoted to weekends on ABC7 before finally arriving in Utah with Good4Utah as the week day morning meteorologist.
Over his career, Devon has witnessed several extreme weather events in many of his markets. While in Las Vegas the all time record high temperature was met at 117°. In Kansas City, he was on-air showing a particular radar image of a confirmed large tornado moving towards the small southwestern Kansas town of Greensburg, that ended up destroying nearly 90% of the town. And in his first winter in Washington, D.C. they set their all time record for snow in a season with 3 monster nor’easters that dropped 56.1″ at Reagan National Airport. He also witnessed one of several violent EF-5 tornadoes to ravage the Oklahoma City metro area in the past two decades, the May 3rd 1999 Bridge Creek – Moore tornado that to this day holds the record for the highest wind speed ever recorded by mobile Doppler radar ~ 300 mph! So what will he bring for us in the Beehive State?!
Devon obtained his meteorology degree from the University of Oklahoma and is accredited as a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist by the American Meteorological Society holding CBM seal number 214. Devon is a husband to his wonderful wife Surae Chinn, and father of 2 to his 4 year old son and 2 year old daughter. He has a passion for weather but also likes to spend time cooking for his family and others. Devon also likes his sports from college to pro football, basketball, baseball, soccer and hockey and tries to hit the swimming pool when he can or take a run whenever possible, and has completed two marathons in Honolulu and Little Rock.
