SALT LAKE CITY (ABC-4 Sports) - Utes head coach Kyle Whittingham is going to keep it a secret who his starting quarterback is until just before kickoff this Saturday against New Mexico. But it certainly appears true freshman Jordan Wynn is going to get the call. Wynn took almost all the snaps with the first team at practice, and is expected to become the new starting quarterback, replacing Terrance Cain.

"Obviously, we're not releasing it yet," said Wynn. "It's a little different, but me and Terrance are preparing exactly the same."

"We're a team," said Cain. "We can't be selfish. Whatever is best for the team, that's what we gotta do."

Whittingham is hoping the quarterback controversy doesn't affect either player's attitude. "Nobody likes to lose their job," said Whittingham. "But we expect out of Terrance what we got out of Jordan when Jordan was on the sidelines. He was supporting Terrance and being a positive factor on our football team."

Wynn replaced Cain last Saturday against Wyoming, and led a 2nd half comeback. Trailing 10-3, Wynn completed 9 of 14 passes for 82 yard's and his first career touchdown pass as the Utes rallied past the Cowboys, 22-10. Cain was 7-1 as a starter, but struggled to move the offense during the Utes last two victories against Air Force and Wyoming.

The fact that Wynn and Cain are such good friends doesn't make the situation any easier. "It would be better if we hated each other," said Wynn. "But with both of us friends, it makes for an interesting relationship."

The Utes host the Lobos this Saturday at Rice-Eccles Stadium at 4:00 p.m.
