SACRAMENTO (ABC 4 Sports) - The Weber State men’s basketball team closed out a perfect February with a 70-55 win at Sacramento State Thursday night at the Hornets Nest in Sacramento. The win was the eighth straight for Weber State which improves to 21-5 overall and 15-2 in Big Sky play.
The ‘Cats also finished February with a perfect 7-0 record. Over the last five years Weber State is now 32-4 in February games, the best record of any team in the country.
The ‘Cats jumped out to a 7-2 lead early on and all seven points came from Wildcat junior Davion Berry. Sacramento State posted a 7-2 run and tied the game at 9-9. The score was tied four times in the first half but the ‘Cats broke away near the end of the half, closing the half on a 6-2 run and held a 32-26 lead at halftime. WSU shot just 40 percent from the field in the first half.
Weber State jumped out to an 11-point lead at 41-30 with 14:00 to play. With Weber State leading 44-38 with 10:43 to play, the Wildcats responded with a 17-3 run over the next four minutes and led by 19 at 61-42 and held on for the win.
The ‘Cats shot 50 percent from the field in the second half and finished the game shooting 45.1. WSU was also 11-20 from three-point range. The ‘Cats came into the game leading the country in both field goal percentage and three-point percentage.
Weber State also outrebounded the Hornets 37-28 and improved to 20-0 this season when outrebounding the opponent. The ‘Cats also added 13 assists and had just eight turnovers.
“We were ready to play tonight and we had to be ready against a tough Sacramento State team,” said WSU head coach Randy Rahe. “I was really proud of our team how we fought and played hard in a tough environment and found a way to win. We were able to knock down some big shots in the second half that made a difference for us.”
Davion Berry, a native of Oakland, Calif., led the Wildcats with 22 points, the eighth time this season he has reached 20 or more points. Berry was 7-11 from the field, including 4-7 from three-point range and also added seven assists and five rebounds.
Senior Scott Bamforth added 14 points and was 4-6 from three-point range. He also moved into 13th place on the WSU career scoring list.
Freshman Joel Bolomboy added 11 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Frank Otis was just 2-13 from the field but pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.
The Wildcats remain in second place in the Big Sky, a half game behind Montana. The Wildcats will play their final road game of the regular season Saturday at Northern Arizona in a game that will begin at 2:00 p.m. in Flagstaff.
