SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 Sports) - Jordan Wynn is done playing football.
Utah's senior quarterback held a press conference today, announcing his retirement from the game.
"It was one of those things where enough is enough," said Wynn.
Wynn injured his left shoulder late in the first half of Friday's overtime loss to Utah State. It marked his 4th shoulder injury since the spring of 2010.
"Football is a game that I love, and it's not an easy decision to make," said Wynn. "At the same time, it's tough to keep putting my body through this. The decision was made with advice from a lot of people, and hopefully it's the right one."
Many Utes fans ABC4's Emerson Lotzia spoke with today think retirement is the right decision for Wynn.
"I've been a Utah fan forever and he's probably one of the more forgettable quarterbacks, to be honest," said Utah student Everett Straley.
Wynn was beginning his fourth season as the starter but was only a junior in eligibility due to a medical extension from the NCAA for his season-ending injury in 2011.
"He was always sort of the broken down car, but the one with a lot of character in it," said Utes fan Matthew White.
"His career should have been over a long time ago, actually never started," Jason Ralston posted on ABC4's Facebook page.
While most fans ABC4 spoke with are happy the Jordan Wynn era has come to a close, others appreciate the four years of service he gave Utah.
"It's sad for him to go that way, but I think everything happens for a reason," said Utes fan Jacky Jones.
Wynn had high expectations coming to Utah. He concluded the best season ever by a Utah true freshman by being named the Poinsettia Bowl MVP.
"Yeah, it's sad but it's good he's taking care of himself," said Utah fan Jenny Larsen.
So how does Wynn want to be remembered by Utah fans?
"[The fans] can remember me however they want," he said. "It would be nice to be remembered for the high points. They can think how they want, but for me it was nothing but positive. I have no regrets. I don't look back and think `I wish I would have done this.' I have done everything I could. Hopefully they think of me in a positive manner."
Moving forward, senior John Hays and freshman Travis Wilson will both take snaps in practice for the Utes as they prepare to take on 25th-ranked Brigham Young University on Saturday night at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Hays will most likely get the start because of his experience. Last season when Wynn went down, Hays stepped in and went 6-3 as a starter. He also led the Utes to 20 points against Utah State Friday night after Wynn failed to lead the offense to any points against the Aggies.
As for any advice Wynn has for both quarterbacks as they gear up for the Cougars...
"My advice to them is just to handle the emotion of the game and remain poised," he said. "Both of those guys will do fine. They have a lot of help around them."
Wynn plans to stay with the team through the end of the season. He also continues to talk with the team about one day joining the Utes coaching staff.
