LEHI (ABC 4 Sports) - Not many people thought the USA men’s soccer team could pull out the win against Algeria once the 90th minute hit. Landon Donovan proved them all wrong in stoppage-time, including some players on Real Salt Lake.
With 3 ½ minutes left in their World Cup, Donovan kept the USA’s title hopes alive with the only goal of the game as the United States beat Algeria 1-0, winning its first World Cup match in eight years. The red, white and blue finished atop its first-round group for the first time since the original World Cup in 1930.
ABC 4 Sports made it out to RSL’s practice Wednesday morning to get reaction from players about the American’s historic goal and their historic win. As expected, they were just as excited as team USA itself.
"As soon as they scored I was punting physio balls all over the weight room," defenseman Chris Wingert said.
"It was like a mosh pit," defenseman Nat Borchers added. "I was going up and running into anybody I possibly could. I think I punched our G.M. in the shoulder."
"I was just about to leave for practice thinking we're not going through and then boom," midfielder Kyle Beckerman said. "It was great."
"It's huge," keeper Nick Rimando said. "It's big for MLS, it's big for U.S. soccer and it's big for this country. To go through on a win has to give them confidence."
"You're wondering whether or not there's going to be one more chance but there was in the 90th minute," head coach Jason Kreis added. "It was cool and to be together and to experience that was fantastic."
