SALT LAKE CITY (ABC-4 Sports) - Cody Stevenson threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Bruce Nix on the final play of the game as Juan Diego won its second straight 3-A state football title in dramatic fashion, beating Hurricane 12-10. The Tigers took the lead with 45 seconds left on a touchdown run by quarterback by Tim Long, only to see its quest for a first state title end with a miraculous play. Tana Vea had 114 yards rushing to lead Juan Diego.
In the 5-A championship game, Bingham erased a 10-point 2nd half deficit to beat upset-minded Davis, 35-24. Darts quarterback Gavin Fowler threw for two touchdowns as Davis took a 17-7 lead into the 2nd half. They maintained that lead on a touchdown run by Tanner Hinds, but the Miners scored 21 unanswered points to win. Quarterback Stefan Cantwell ran for four touchdowns, including the go-ahead score in the 4th quarter. Harvey Langi rushed for 118 yards and a touchdown as the Miners claimed their second state championship in the last four years.
Timpview won its fourth straight 4-A championship, easily beating Springville in the title game, 35-6. Thunderbirds quarterback Trevor Brown threw three touchdown passes, while Ofa Latu intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown as Timpview blew open a close game in the second half. Josey Trammell and Jeremiah Burr each rushed for touchdowns. Alema Key scored the lone touchdown for the Red Devils.
