San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - North Carolina claimed its 21st D-I women's soccer championship on Sunday, routing Penn State 4-1 at the Torero Stadium.
The Tar Heels got off to a blinding start when Kealia Ohai opened the scoring inside the second minute.
The two sides went into halftime tied at a goal apiece after Penn State pulled one back in the 19th minute thanks to Taylor Schram.
But it was all North Carolina after the restart as the Tar Heels scored three goals in the first 29 minutes to put the title victory beyond any doubt.
Hanna Gardner scored in the first minute of the second period to put North Carolina in front.
The Tar Heels wrapped up the victory thanks to Satara Murray's goal in the 64th and Ranee Premji's strike in the 75th.
Adelaide Gay faced three shots in goal for the Tar Heels, making two saves.
North Carolina finishes the season with a 15-5-3 record compared to Penn State's final record of 22-4-2.
