SANDY, Utah (ABC 4 News) - If you've ever nearly torn your hair out because your dog won't behave, a trainer in Sandy wants to give you some renewed hope. Anthony deGreef, owner of "Anthony's Pets, LLC" says even very badly behaved dogs can be taught to do what you want them to...it just takes time and expertise.

He takes dogs with serious behavioral issues into his own home for three to five weeks and teaches them lifelong obedience. Its worked so far for Ellie, who is a beautiful yellow Labrador retriever. But just a few weeks ago, Ellie's owners were ready to send her away to a shelter. "She was running away, actually, quite a bit, and they had initially given us their dog because of the fact that she was getting out of their yard, wouldn't come when called, jumping all over the kids," deGreef said.

As a last resort, they sent her to deGreef. He's been training her one-on-one, and now she is much calmer and more obedient, and does so well she could now live indoors if her owners wanted her to.

deGreef uses praise, his own movements, and a chain collar to show the dogs what he wants them to do. And over the course of this long-term training, it sticks for life. But even after four weeks of intense training, a dog's process is not done, because the owners and handlers of these animals also need to learn new things about how they communicate with their pets. It's all about body language.

deGreef says most owners make the mistake of overpraising their pets, which just ends up confusing them more. And most owners just don't have the time needed to train a dog this way.

At Anthony's Pets, LLC, they do guarantee their training for life, including any follow-up sessions. They also offer one-hour private in-home instruction for dog owners who need a little help understand how to communicate with their dogs.
