CLINTON, Utah (ABC4 News) JanaLynn McEwen says she did all she could to protect her children from the swine flu virus, but it was not enough. She says others are not taking it seriously and jeopardizing the life of her daughter.
7 year old Charlotte McEwen has junior rheumatoid arthritis and the drugs she takes makes her immune system very weak. Her mother has been working hard with her 5 brothers and sisters to make sure they wash hands and stay germ free. But, on Wednesday, Charlotte's older brother Mark Robert was diagnosed with the H1N1 virus. He says he got it at school because other parents are allowing sick kids to come to class and the school is doing nothing about it.
"The parents aren't taking this seriously" , she told ABC4's Ross Becker, "people aren't taking it seriously we need to protect others." She says now that her son is sick with the swine flu she is very worried about Charlotte, "they've told us if my seven year old get's it they don't know if she will be able to make it". JanaLynn McEwen says she will keep all the kids in the house for now because she can't risk anyone else getting sick.
She is pleading with people to keep their kids home of they are sick and to use the hand wipes in stores and to cough into their arms. Even if they don't get sick from it, they might infect someone else. For some, she says it's not a big deal to get sick but for her daughter it's a matter of life or death, "it's not just about my kids anymore".
ABC4 News contacted the school in Davis County and did not receive a call back.
