PROVO, Utah (ABC 4 News) - One of the wealthiest Utahns is aligning himself with California gays and against the LDS Church. Bruce Bastian, the co-founder of WordPerfect, now says he's giving a seven figure donation to help protect gay marriage in California.

This November, Californians will vote on whether gay marriage should be legal or not.

The LDS Church has already come out strongly in support of Proposition 8 which would amend the California Constitution and ban gay marriage.

And that's why Bruce Bastian is getting involved.

This weekend, at a big human rights fund raiser in San Francisco, Bastian donated one million dollars to fight Prop 8.

Bruce Bastian told ABC 4 News, "I don't believe you can necessarily change someone’s mind one way or another but you can at least honestly and openly give both sides of the story."

Bastian says he decided to get involved after the LDS First presidency sent a letter to its California congregations last month.

The letter asks members to support Prop 8 and reminds them of the Church's position on gay marriage.

That letter and the LDS Church's position didn't sit well with Bastian.

Bastion said,  "I'm just not going to sit quietly by and let them do it. I just don't believe it's right. I don't believe it's fair. I don't believe it's what Jesus would do."

Bastian admits this is a lot of money to give and that he spent a lot of time thinking about whether or not to do it.

And while he isn't sure whether he is being courageous or "idiotic" giving away a million dollars, Bastian does know what he wants to say to the LDS Church.

Bastian said, "They don't have to change their church views but they need to stay out of the political views. And they need to let families deal with this and love each other."

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints declined ABC 4's invitation to comment on this story.

Mr. Bruce Bastian, you are a hero to those of us fighting for equal rights. Thank you very much for your donation. To those of you who think he's stupid for spending this much money, it's more "Christ-like" than what your own church is doing, donating about 40% of the money that fuels a hate proposition. What was it again about Satan wanting to force others to do what was right instead of letting them have the free agency that so many church members advocate? And what is the LDS church doing? Forcing others to believe what they THINK is right. How can anyone not see the hypocrisy of this situation?

As a member of the Church, I have been significantly disheartened by the tone of words used with gay brothers and sisters in the gospel. Many have been spoken to with derision and turned out from their congregations and from their own families after some, and I clarify, some Bishops & Stake Presidents counseled them to cast them out. The Church has been trying to do something about that, and I applaud anything that moves in a positive direction. However, I have memories of dead friends who took their own lives because of the self-loathing they were taught ot have for their "abomination." They loved our Church, served missions for it out of monies they saved up for most of their youth, and then came home and tried to reconcile that they were gay with family. Their own conflict with the values and love of the church and family, became too much to bear after rejection from all they had ever known and had been responsible for forming these beautiful gentle and loving young men. I do not believe that this is what Jesus Christ wants. To clairy, I do not believe that Jesus Christ wants us to turn our back on any of our loved ones. I do not believe he wants any gays verbally or physically attacked. I do not believe that Jesus Christ hates gays. And, while I do believe that the Church has a right to teach its values and principles, it also carries the extreme obligation of living the the greatest commandment ever given to us. That is, to love one another. Love doesn't mean you have to agree. But love also doesn't mean whispering and speaking about gays behind their backs. It doesn't mean forming alliances with other religions who participate in orgnized anit-gay rallies and hate-speech. And, while the LDS Church is not using hate-speech, some of the churches they have joined in partnership against Proposition 8 in California do use it. Some members say they are following the prophet when they make phone calls, & knock on doors. I say, follow Christ, what would Jesus do?

"The stone is cut out of the mountain, and rolling forth..." There is no stopping knowledge, good science nor consciousness! There are three genders. To be in denial of this reality simply reveals the ignorance and bigiotry that emanates from the Mormon hiearchy. Praise be to Brother Bruce Bastian!

This (LDS members' attitude towards gay people) was a sore spot for my husband and me when we joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints nine years ago. We have several gay friends and acquaintances, two who are from LDS families and have been "disowned" by their families. Their being disowned is a weakness on their families' parts, not the weakness of Christ's love (and we certainly are never taught to disown or reject a gay person). I may not like or understand fully why the LDS church is taking a political stand, and it doesn't feel right to me (I don't feel the Spirit when petitions go around against gay marriage), but I love so much more about the church, so I remain. It's kind of like being happy that you live in America...there are many things about the USA that I am angry about (history, current injustices, etc), but I remain and am proud to be an American. I am proud of our freedom to worship. I am proud that Bastian has his freedom, too. I believe there will be a time when gay families can have the same freedoms and rights as man-woman marriages. There are so many children that need adoption into loving homes. Many gay couples provide loving homes for needy children. The LDS church has something called "A Proclamation to the World" about families. It's good stuff, and I believe in my heart that it is meant for each of us to read and apply it to our lives personally with our own agency...not read it and apply it to someone else's life. Christ's love is true and is meant for all. We have leaders that give us guidance. It's our responsibility to pray, ponder, test, and gain a testimony of the guidance. Sometimes people's and communities' own hang-ups shed a different light on that guidance and interpret it a different way. Following our leaders is important, but not blindly. I love this church...there is so much good, really.

Even in the Bible it states that men should create and multiply the Earth. How can that be done between the same sex. All the church is doing is stating what they feel. (Freedom of speach) Do they not have a right to say what they feel is right?

It still amazes me how ignorant the LDS church is. I am not nor will ever be a member of the LDS church. My wife and her family have been and will remain members of the LDS church. My brother-in-law is gay and I am proud of him for being strong enough to come out about it. He has been shunned by his own family. I am the only person he is able to talk to. If the church wants to get involved in the political arena more power to them. The only real downfall for them is that it will bring to light how very hypocritical they are. They supposedly live by the book, which I only have a basic knowledge of, yet I find it hard to believe that God would tell you to disown your own flesh and blood. I have made a big change in my life because I used to be against any type of homosexuality, but when you take the time to talk with a few of them you begin to understand that they are just normal people with normal problems. I still may not agree with their sexual choice, but in reality, it is their business. All of you that are against gay marriage should ask yourself if you think it would be fair to have your choices publicly scrutinized. Perhaps those of you that are members of the LDS church should just keep your nose out of peoples business and have another cup of hot chocolate, oh wait you aren’t supposed to have “hot drink”, so says your book of mormon.

Really? The Mormons who sing praises to the man, church founder Joseph Smith, who 'married' at least 33 women - eleven of whom were already married and remained married to their original legal, still living husbands, are going to lecture the world on the moral imperative of 'one man, one woman' marriage? The followers of a man who deceived his wife Emma for years about his sexual liaisons with the wives and daughters of his followers (beginning with Emma's maid - 16 year old Fanny Alger) until he came up with the 'god made me do it' excuse, think they have the moral high ground here? Polygamy remains canonized church doctrine and is believed by the LDS to be practiced by god and will be practiced by them in heaven. If monogamy is ordained by god on earth, why isn't the preferable practice in heaven? When the Mormon 'prophets' remove Section 132, denounce Smith's serial adultery, and declare monogamy the correct order of heaven as well as earth - then and only then will I listen to anything they have to say about marriage without snickering. You go Bastian!
