SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The Utah Symphony has a new music director.

Thierry Fischer will be the symphony's seventh music director.

Utah Symphony Utah Opera President and CEO Melia Tourangeau made the announcement on Thursday.

Fischer is a native of Geneva. He spent two guest conducting weeks with the Utah Symphony over the past two seasons. He is currently the principal conductor of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and chief conductor of the Nagoya Philharmonic.

Fischer was unanimously selected by the 12-member search committee. He will conduct one performance with the symphony in the 2009-10 season and five Masterworks performances during the 2010-11 season. His contract is for four years, with an option to renew for an additional three years in 2011.

Former Music Director Keith Lockhart concluded his tenure in May.
