SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (AP) - Attorneys forimprisoned polygamous church leader Warren Jeffs will argue an appealof his 2007 criminal conviction before the Utah Supreme Court.
A hearing is scheduled Tuesday afternoon at Salt Lake City's Scott M. Matheson Courthouse.
The head of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of LatterDay Saints, Jeffs was convicted of two counts of first-degree felonyrape as an accomplice for his role in the 2001 marriage of a14-year-old follower.
Jeffs is serving two consecutive prison terms of five years to life.
Defense attorneys contend that 5th District Judge James Shumateshould be ordered to reconsider a motion for a new trial. They sayShumate improperly seated an alternate juror after the start ofdeliberations.
The group has a ranch complex in West Texas, at Eldorado.
