"We thought of Charlie and Braden as hopefully someday being our kids and that’s probably the hardest part knowing that dream is gone." - Kirk Graves
SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - Family members of Susan Powell told ABC 4 News they are devastated after learning the children of Susan and Josh were killed in an explosion in Washington state.

ABC 4 News talked to Kirk Graves, Josh Powell's brother-in-law, about the explosion that killed Charlie, 7, and Braden, 5.

Graves said the day was like any other Sunday. He was in his office and his wife was sleeping when the phone rang with news of the deadly explosion.

Graves said his wife Jennifer took the call and said, "She came into the room that I was in and she was incoherent and it took me a while to figure out what she was talking about."

Police said a case worker dropped off Josh Powell's sons at the home Sunday afternoon for a supervised visit, the source said. Powell then shut the door on the caseworker and locked it.

The case worker then reported smelling gas fumes, and then an explosion ripped through the home, killing all three.

Graves believes a lot of people feel guilty for not doing more to keep this situation from happen but thinks the guilt is misplaced. He said, "I think there are a lot of people that blame themselves, but this is Josh. He did this and he’s the only one to bear the brunt of it."

Graves continued, "I don’t think anyone had any indications at all that this was in the works that Josh could go this far with it."

Kirk Graves broke the news to Josh's mother. When asked how she took the news, he said, "She is not doing well."

The news leaves the Graves family searching for comfort, coming to grips with the loss of not just Susan, but know her two young children. The family was battling Josh for custody.  Earlier this week Josh Powell was ordered to undergo a psycho-sexual evaluation by the judge handling the custody case.

Susan's family hoped they would be able to permanently welcome Charlie and Braden into the family.

Graves said, "We thought of Charlie and Braden as hopefully someday being our kids and that’s probably the hardest part knowing that dream is gone."

How dare this evil piece of crap Steven Powell....go on national TV and soil the precious name & reputation of Susan Cox, when He & his twisted deranged son slaughtered her and still had her innocent blood dripping on their filthy hands while selling their stories suggesting in media interviews that Susan was “immoral“ or “mentally imbalanced“ and ran away with another man. There must be a special place in Hell for a murdering butcher father & son that would do that. Steven Powell should be put to death for that ALONE! This subhuman "thing" Steven Powell is the embodiment of pure, unadulterated evil.

I am just so, so sorry. There aren't any words strong enough to condemn that monster's actions, nor words healing enough to relieve your pain. I am left bereft with only these hollow-sounding but sincere words on my lips: I am so, so sorry.

May God comfort the family devastated by this loss and may our laws become strong enough to not ever allow children to be unprotected from a sociopathic parent during custody battles. Children will no more be allowed to be used as vengeance tools by any parent. Ever ever again.
