SANDY, Utah (ABC 4 News) - She simply wanted to make salsa, but while trying to raise money online for her new business a Sandy woman got a shock - a rude, and seemingly racist, email from a Salt Lake County government employee.

Linnaea Mendoza started her salsa business, Salsitas Mendoza, just a year ago.

"I entered into the Taylorsville days with some salsa that I made and canned and it just took off from there,” explained Mendoza.

Her salsa is now in several local stores and restaurants. It's doing so well she and her husband even opened a store front in Sandy. The only problem is there's no kitchen.

Mendoza said, "In order to make this commercially we have to rent a kitchen and it’s only available grave yard shifts.”

They'd like to make the salsa at their store, but they need a $12,000 dollar commercial hood first. So Linnaea started a Kickstarter page where people could donate money. To promote the fundraising efforts, her sister posted an ad on another website under charity advertisements.

The feedback was positive until she got this email from a Salt Lake County government employee.

Jedd Bogenschutz wrote: jbogenschutz@slco.org - "I respond to people in need in this section that really need it. After reading your ad I had to respond and say are you ... f...ing serious?? your ad had to be the most disgusting ad I have ever read, really taking donations so you can finish a kitchen so you south of the borders can get ahead, you can bet I would never buy any of your garbage, I do have some connections, board of health, business license, ect. I will make sure your (sic) on the up and up."

Mendoza told ABC 4 News, "What his personal views are on people's race and religion that is none of my business. What offends me, makes me really upset, is that he used a government email address to post racial remarks."

We couldn't believe it either when we saw the comments so we went to the county assessor's office where Bogenschutz works, but he wasn't there. We read Bogenschutz's email to the supervisor who promised an investigation.

Chris Stavros, Statistical Division Director Salt Lake County Assessor’s Office said, "I take any situation like this seriously. Of course I will look into it, and we don't obviously…the remarks were not very tasteful and inappropriate so we'll look into that.">

Linnaea hopes that actually happens. "Beyond the racial component, what offends me is he's boasting his position with a state job to threaten my small business.”

Before going to air we did hear back from the county assessor’s office. Stavros told ABC 4 News Bogenschutz is an exemplary employee who has been with the county for the last 25 years. He said the internal investigation was complete and Bogenschutz would be facing disciplinary action although he wouldn’t say what that would entail.

Fire him? He will live his life with having to think about his attitude,he is learning big lessons, and will be a better person and a better employee. Absolutely do NOT fire somebody when they make a mistake!

He should be fired, there is no place for ignorance and bigotry like that in SLCo Government! Not only was it insulting to that family, but also to me, and I have almost nothing in common with that family other than I don't like bigots. This County Employee threatened use of his "connections" in County Government, which is a clear violation of policy. He should undoubtedly be fired, without any further compensation.

Shameful act by a shameful human! Do the Mendoza's a solid, go buy some of their fantastic product! I buy a tub nearly every week at the Wasatch Front Farmers Market, and highly recommend it to everybody! The county employee deserves to lose his job. The Mendoza family deserves to live the American dream. Support them by visiting their small business.

Do you really expect anything different from a government employee? A little power corrupts a little, a lot, corrupts a lot. Why is the business owner compelled to spend 12,000.00 to make her business go? Not only does the government make unjustified demands on free enterprise, and entrepreneurs, they insult them on top of that? Did you see the John Stossel episode about the lady in AZ who was happily selling hot dogs with bacon, no customers complaining, but a city official insisted that in order to sell bacon, she had to have the proper equipment, costing 25,000.00. When she didn't comply, she was put in jail for 30 days and fined 5,000.00. Now she's "back on the streets", but without the bacon. Customers don't get what they want, but the government officials get what THEY want - the power to lord it over the rest of us, "for our own good". RIGHT.

I'm sorry, but it really doesn't matter if he was on government time and equipment or not. He WAS using his government Email, therefore representing government. He deserves to lose his job, and his pension.

I demand that this ignorant man be fired from his position. The remark he made has offended me as a HUMAN,as CITIZEN OF THE LAND OF THE FREE, and as a WHITE PERSON> It is white people such as him that makes me ashamed to be white. I applaud this family for trying to start their own business. That should leave more white folks in the welfare line because they are too lazy to work and are not smart enough to start their own business. I will purchase their salsa...... alot of it as a matter of fact>
