SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The Salt Lake County district attorney's office has cleared a Salt Lake City police officer of wrongdoing in the fatal shooting of a heavily armed U.S. Army solider in military fatigues.

Brandon S. Barrett was killed Aug. 27 on a busy street in Salt Lake City after wounding police officer Uppson Downes in a leg. District Attorney Lohra Miller announced Monday that Downs' use of lethal force was justified.

The U.S. Army says Barrett joined the military nearly four years ago but had disappeared in July from the Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Tacoma, Wash.

A warrant obtained by the Army in August accused Barrett of being a deserter.
