MURRAY, Utah (ABC 4 News) - Utah Highway Patrol troopers say a reckless driver caused at least three crashes on I-15 between Murray and Sandy on Friday afternoon before he was killed in a violent rollover.
The southbound lanes of I-15 between 70th South and 90th South were closed down as crews worked to clear the scene.
At least 8 vehicles were involved.
The incident began when the driver of red Pontiac SUV got involved in a crash on 1300 South in Salt Lake City and fled before police could arrive.
UHP troopers say the driver was then seen speeding down I-15, weaving in and out of traffic.
At about 5400 South and I-15, troopers say the driver clipped two more vehicles and kept going. There were only minor injuries from those crashes.
When the driver reached 8600 South, troopers say he hit the concrete median and flipped, rolling more than 100 yards down the freeway, while hitting other vehicles.
The driver, a man described as being near his 50s, died from injuries received in that crash, according to the UHP.
Other drivers and passengers in the other vehicles in the 8600 South crash sustained only minor injuries.
The southbound lanes remained closed for nearly 3 hours as crews and investigators worked to clear the scene and attend to all the injured.
