SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Residents and businesses in unincorporated Salt Lake County will soon be paying more for police protection.
Officials with the county's law enforcement district board voted Monday to impose a $13 million fee on unincorporated areas like Magna, Millcreek and Kearns.
Single-family homes will pay an extra $174 a year toward the Unified Police Department. The first bills will come by mid-February. Businesses, industries and charitable institutions would pay more.
Instead of raising property taxes, county leaders came up with the fee to charge homes and businesses based on their historic demand on police services.
The police bills will be sent to the 170,000 residents and 2,500 businesses in the unincorporated county.
