MAGNA, Utah (ABC 4 News) - Plans to build a memorial for Susan Powell and her two boys are underway.
Her friends are raising money, looking for an artist and a site to honor Susan and her boys Charley and Braden.
President of the Pleasant Green Cemetery, Hiram Burtoch offered a plot of land along the west side of the Salt Lake Valley.
The cemetery dates back to the mid 1800's and is the final resting place for many of Salt Lake Valley's first pioneers, Burtoch says.
"This is my great great grandfather James," he pointed out to the ABC 4 crew.
He says it would be a good spot for the memorial because it stands about 2.5 miles from the location Susan raised her two boys and it overlooks the valley.
"We've all been hurting and we all need some way to heal," he said.
Susan's family and friends say they're flattered by Burtoch's offer.
"I think it's such a kind amazing generous offer, to have land offered for a memorial it's something I hadn't even thought about yet," said Susan's friend, Kiirsi Hellewell.
She is part of a seven person committee for Susan memorial.
The committee is considering Burtoch's offer, but at this point is keeping all options open.
For the first time ever, Hellewell is speaking openly about the memorial.
She now believes Susan is dead because Josh is dead and his father Steve is in jail.
"Those are the two that I believe responsible for her disappearance so it seems to me that it has been such a long time that she must be dead," said Hellewell.
The memorial is only an idea, but Kiirsi can see it in her mind.
"I would love to see an eventual statue of Susan with her arms around her boys that's how I want to remember them. I want it to be a peaceful uplifting place, not a place of sorrow and sadness," she said.
Susan's memorial committee is thankful for Burtoch's offer and offers from artists, but won't make any final decisions yet.
It's taking it's time making sure the eventual memorial stands the test of time.
"There is no closure. I don't think there ever will be closure," said Hellewell.
