SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints released a statement regarding the California Supreme Court's decision to uphold Proposition 8.

Here is the statement from Scott Trotter, spokesperson for the Church:

Today’s decision by the California Supreme Court is welcome. The issue the court decided was whether California citizens validly exercised their right to amend their own constitution to define marriage as between a man and a woman. The court has overwhelmingly affirmed their action.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recognizes the deeply held feelings on both sides, but strongly affirms its belief that marriage should be between a man and a woman. The bedrock institution of marriage between a man and a woman has profound implications for our society. These implications range from what our children are taught in schools to individual and collective freedom of religious expression and practice.

Accordingly, the Church stands firmly for what it believes is right for the health and well-being of society as a whole. In doing so, it once again affirms that all of us are children of God, and all deserve to be treated with respect. The Church believes that serious discussion of these issues is not helped when extreme elements on both sides of the debate demonize the other.

The problems lies in the hypocritical actions of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Namely in point that the laws of the land are the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Nevertheless the LDS teach, "Let no man break the laws of the land, for he that keepeth the laws of God hath no need to break the laws of the land." (D&C 58:21)

I think its odd that the gay society are pin pointing the church to be the sole cause of the decision. Do they not realize that California was influenced and supported by 6+ other religions and highly supported by officials of the state and citizens who clearly are NOT Mormon? Start realizing that the general public do not like gays and its not based on the mormon religion. So leave them alone and wake up to society. But as with all cases people need someone to blame when they dont want to recongize their own wrong actions. So by all means you can blame it on mormons but know that the majority of us that are not simply support the proposition as well based on our own thoughts about what the gay society would bring to our streets.

I'm pretty glad this got upheld. I've been having lots of sex (the gay kind, thank you very much) with a pretty high ranking member of the LDS leadership (won't say who, but he's in the Quorums of the Seventy) and I'm worried he would want to get married if this type of change came to Utah. I think if we can stamp this out in California (and Iowa next) I can maintain with commitment free sexually swinging lifestyle. I know I'm going to donate a lot more money to this cause.

This is really about sex. Some people don't like the idea of two men or two women together. As if married couples actually have alot of sex. Public schools don't teach marriage, families and churches teach (or preach) marriage. Being straight and married does not determine the health or well being of individuals or society. Unfortunately, the LDS church directly involved itself in Prop. 8 by contributing to the Prop. 8 special interest coalition known as ProtectMarriage.com, thereby exposing itself to criticism. Ever heard of free agency? Keep church and state separate.

This is really about religion and sex. Some people, for whatever reason, don't like the idea of two men or two women doing it. As if married couples actually have alot of sex. Being straight and married does not determine the health and well being of individuals or society (see LDS social services). Since when did schools, even those who fancifully instruct all students to be abstinent, teach students about marriage? Ever heard of free agency? Keep church and state separate.

"[LDS] stands firmly for what it believes is right for the health and well-being of society as a whole. In doing so, it once again affirms that... all deserve to be treated with respect" WTF?! How friggin' hypocritical can you get? "Well-being of society" was probably the same argument used to exclude Blacks from LDS too, or justification for polygamy. I wish LDS leaders would do the rest of the world a favor and savor a Jim Jones' "colada" with the rest of their elders. Douchebags!!

How can the LDS Church say they believe in our right to freedom of religion and in the same breath argue for taking away MY right to freedom of religion??? Many of our faiths DO support our freedom to marry the one whome we love and cherish, regardless of whether they are the opposite or same sex. Our country was founded upon the principle of freedom from the Tyranny of religion and King. The whims of any religion should never be crammed down the throat of those who are not members of said religion. That is wrong... just as wrong as when the Taliban or any other group forces their religion on the population as a whole.

There are a lot of gay missionaries that are serving the LDS church right now-so what's the big deal? It seems as though there is a lot of fear-mongering among the church leadership--afraid that their spouse may leave them for a same-sex partner. Weird..I think it would be more beneficial for the LDS church to abolish poverty instead of wasting big bucks in politics. With all of the millions of dollars "donated" to the church, wouldn't it be wonderful if the church actually fought poverty in the State of California? Hmmmm....somthing to think about..

I don't know what could be more demonic than to rejoice over the decision of a court to deny the fundamental right of happiness to a minority.
