Salt Lake Police say a man opened fire inside the Trolley Square Mall on Monday evening. Police say the suspect was shot and killed, and that five of his victims are dead. At least four other people were rushed to two Salt Lake City hospitals in critical and serious condition. Two patients are being treated at LDS Hospital and the other two are at the University of Utah Medical Center.
A Salt Lake City Police spokesperson said the injured include a 34 year old man, a 53 year old man, a 44 year old woman and another adult male whose age is undetermined. The older male and the 44 year old female were still listed in critical, but stable condition Tuesday morning. The other two men were said to be in serious, but stable condition. No other information could be released because of privacy laws.
Robin Snyder of the Salt Lake Police Department reported that the shooter was shooting at random in multiple areas. He engaged in a shootout with several police officers inside the mall before being fatally wounded.
Police said the gunman killed five people before being killed himself. Among the dead are a 15 year old girl, two 28 year old women, a 24 year old man and a 52 year old man. Investigators say the gunman was a 18 year old male from Salt Lake City.
Multiple police and ambulance vehicles surrounded the area as the mall was locked down.
Most people inside the mall were evacuated immediately, but some remained locked in stores as police secured the area. Police could not confirm how many people remained inside the mall.
Officials transported several witnesses to the main Salt Lake City library for interrogation. Salt Lake police have asked anyone who needs counseling to contact Valley Mental Health at 261-1442.
