SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - It was a meeting set to bring two sides together on a very divisive issue within the LDS community: gays in the church.

The church asked to delay the meeting, but members of the group "Affirmation" decided to go ahead anyway, saying if they can't talk to church leaders face-to-face they will talk to them through the media.

Gay mormons are talking, and are anxious to be heard and understood. The group decided to use Monday's press conference as a dress rehearsal for the real meeting yet to be announced. The problem is that meeting may never take place now.

Cameras at the ready, the presentation went on as planned as if LDS leaders are listening.

The message from Affirmation, a group of gay and lesbian mormons, is strong and to the point.

“This issue is breaking up families. The church's teachings are breaking up families,” says Affirmation member George Cole.

The group wants acceptance in the church and better education for local leaders.

They claim many gay Mormons are so conflicted they feel suicide is their only option. They also say many LDS teens are now homeless; kicked out of their home because they are gay.

The room was full of optimism from men and women who believe in the LDS church, and want to be a part of it.

“I’m hoping that eventually the church will get to the point where we can attend church, where we can actively serve and not be third class citizens,” says Affirmation member Brian Benington.

Benington and his partner Duane Jennings have been through a lot to be together. They have mixed feelings, but remain hopeful that the church will eventually hear their story.

“Frustrated and optimistic, frustrated because of the history, optimistic because the world is changing,” says Jennings.

But that open dialogue Affirmation members were hoping for may be in jeopardy now. The church released this statement this afternoon after their press conference:

"It has always been the intent of the church to engage in an open and honest discussion with Affirmation leaders and listen to their concerns. When the church was originally approached by Affirmation, church officials offered a much earlier meeting date. The meeting was put on hold until August at Affirmation's request. The church asked for the same courtesy as it hires a new director of family services, a position crucial to this conversation. The issues surrounding same gender attraction deserve careful attention not public posturing. It appears from Affirmation's actions today that it has opted for a public rather than a private exchange."

Affirmation was questioned about this press conference on Monday, and its leaders said they didn't want to wait until next year.

Wake up Mormon church leaders! I think the gay young Mormons and their families are trying to tell you something. When a young gay Mormon spills his brains at your church steps, something is wrong. Reality check!

How pathetic are the church leaders, who do not love their own young ones enough to avert suicides and other forms of catastrophic disaster. They need a lesson in unconditional love as taught by Jesus.

I feel very sad that a church that is supposed to teach love can be so callous, cruel and cold to let their young ones commit suicide and not do something about it. How hypocritical is that!

I am just a common person who was raised in the church, so I am not authority what so ever. I do believe that our Heavenly Father created a man and a woman in the begining for one specific reason. His intent was not that of guys being with guys and girls being with girls. Right wrong or indifferent that is my belief. So for gays and lesbians to expect otherwise of our Heavenly Father seems a little backwards to me. I know he is all loving and does not judge us but I also think that having gay and lesbain dialouge in the church does not agree with the standards of the family. To say that children are committing suicide because the church leaves them no option leaves me to believe that they just need a scape goat for their problems. Like I said I am just an common person with my own thinking. Maybe I am wrong and someone will disagree with me but that is okay. I feel strongly about teaching tolerance, but when it is God's church only he can say what will be allowed. The fact that Affirmation is angry with the church leaders does not surprise me at all. They want their beliefs to be put in writing with the church...WHY? So they can be recognized with in the church? When they know the LDS faith is based on a Husband and Wife. Why make us each change...why can we not just agree to believe differently and not fight about it? That is my question to Affirmation!

Wow, the LDS church needs to listen to their kids. This is incredibly disappointing. But hopefully they will listen when their kids start killing themselves and facing the problems on the streets they can go ahead and "postpone" the meeting. We NEED to get this solved.

The church's press release stated "It has always been the intent of the church to engage in an open and honest discussion with Affirmation leaders and listen to their concerns" That is disingenuous to say the least... Affirmation has written to the church for years requesting an audience and this was the first and only response they ever recieved. And they received this response only after bringing the pressure of the media to bear on the situation. The church is the entity with all the power in this situation. It seems pretty obvious to many of us that they chose to postpone the meeting because of their current politicking in California, not because there was no one competent to speak with Affirmation. I'm disappointed once again in the church I was raised in and spent most of my life serving.
