SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Despite opposition from some residents and shop owners, a pet crematorium has moved a step closer to reality in Salt Lake City.

The city planning commission on Wednesday recommended approval of the proposal by Rival Investments to the City Council.

The commission sided with owner Earl Tate, who said the furnaces will not emit hair or an odor.

Plans call for the pet cremation service to set up shop in a 115-year-old home surrounded by businesses, eateries and a college campus.

Opponents say the crematorium will adversely affect neighboring businesses.

But commission Chairwoman Babs De Lay says the angst is more about perception since pervasive pet odor is "technologically impossible."
