Slideshow: Al Sharpton visits Utah While Reverend Al Sharpton's recent trip to Utah got a lot of attention, what isn't well known is what Sharpton did Monday night. The Pentecostal minister spent Family Home Evening in Sandy.
Most Utahns only saw Al Sharpton surrounded by the media, but Jorge and Debbie Becerra saw something different.
Jorge Becerra: "Something my dad taught me is that when I meet someone for the first time I shake their hand and look them into their eyes. What I saw was a good man."
Sharpton was an immediate hit with the Becerra's four youngest children and he was also quite taken with them.
Debbie Becerra: "My daughter at the beginning of Family Home Evening saying I know the redeemer lives, my 12 year old, and they seemed to really enjoy that more than anything."
When Sharpton read scriptures with the Sandy residents - the 15th chapter of Luke - that's when they truly felt like he was part of the family.
Sharpton even joined the kids in singing the LDS hymn, "Choose the Right."
Debbie Becerra: "Especially living in Utah, sometimes we don't get to see a large diversity of people. And I think it was a great learning experience for them."
Jorge Becerra says, at first, he was a little nervous about Reverend Sharpton coming over. But in the end this Stake President felt that he and his guest were not all that different.
Jorge Becerra: "If he asked me to go do something with him, I'd go with him. I'd help him out. That's how comfortable I am with him."
Now, all in all, Sharpton spent about 45 minutes at the Becerra's home. But because of his busy schedule, the Reverend had to leave before the triple layer banana cake was served.
