GRUNDY, Virginia (ABC 4 News) - Two hundred and seventy-five voices strong are echoing their love for four year-old Ethan Stacy Tuesday night.

For this coal mining town of four thousand, Ethan’s violent death so far away is something profoundly sad.  Those who never met the cute little blonde boy have also been deeply affected.

Curtis Mullins, Vice President of the Grundy funeral home where Ethan’s service will take place, witnessed first hand the outreach of love and concern from countless callers.

“Never in my life have I seen so much outpouring,” says Mullins “From all fifty states.  People are really showing their love for this family.”

He adds, “We’ve had calls here at the funeral home 24/7 since it happened.  At first they can’t believe it happened, and second they can’t understand why a mother would allow something like this to happen to her son.”

“I’ve got to learn to accept the fact that he’s not coming home. I really have it in my head that he’s coming home, and he’s not.” -Joe Stacy

Ethan’s grieving dad, Joe Stacy sat down with ABC4 and said he may never get over losing his son; never get over losing Ethan, who he fondly recalls as a loving, smart boy about to start kindergarten in the fall.

He told ABC4’s Robert Maxwell, “I’ve got to learn to accept the fact that he’s not coming home. I really have it in my head that he’s coming home, and he’s not.”

Stacy said that Ethan told him in their last phone conversation on May 3rd that he was having fun visiting his mom in Layton. Prior to leaving, Ethan hadn’t wanted to go.

Stacy also told ABC4’s Maxwell that he briefly met Nathan Sloop, Ethan’s new step-father and current suspect in Ethan’s death, at the airport when Stacy dropped Ethan off, and said that Nathan seemed like, “a nice guy.”

He pointed out that Nathan Sloop has a five year-old daughter of his own and that he never thought Sloop capable of anything like this.

Stacy said he is overwhelmed with the support he’s received from Utahns. He added that he was very moved by the images of the memorial for Ethan outside the home that the young boy briefly shared with his mother in Layton.

Ethan’s funeral service will begin at 1pm on Wednesday.
