SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC 4 NEWS) - Halloween is tomorrow and before the big night of fright we've got some tips to keep your kids costumes from going up in spoke and some tricks to keep swine flu from spreading.
How safe is your childs Halloween costume? That's a question you should be asking today, especially if it were to come in contact with a candle?
Another question is how to keep the swing flu out of your candy bowl.
South Salt Lake City Fire Captain Jason Nicholl says a very small flame is enough to do devastating damage to a young child and he says all costumes are flammable, even the ones that claim to be flame resistant.
Imagine your little tot out trick or treating in their favorite costume and while standing at the door waiting for goodies their costume comes in contact with the flame from a jack o'latern, with in seconds it's fully engulfed. Captain Nicholls says, "You're looking at second and third degree burns and months if not years of recovery time. It's senseless pain and suffering for these small kids when all they wanted is a piece of candy."
So, what should you do to keep your kids safe? First, instead of candles use glow sticks. Homeowners make sure you don't have anything with fire in or around your porch and parents supervise your kids at all times. In the event that your childs costume does catch fire remind them to stop, drop and roll. The natural instinct is to run which fuels the fire.
Speaking of fueling the fire, swine flu has everyone spooked and using a lot more hand sanitizer which is alcohol based. If you lather it on your little goblin and they come in contact with a flame it's a recipe for disaster.
When passing out candy don't let the little ghosts and goblins put their paws in the candy bowl. Instead, have one person designated to pass out the treats and put them straight in the bag. Also, don't forget all of the other witching night safety. Experts say before you head out go over all the basic safety rules and don't forget to check all of that candy before the little ones devour it!
