FARMINGTON (ABC 4 News) - A Kaysville man was sent home early from his LDS mission to face charges of child rape, officials said.
In court documents, Davis County Prosecutors claim that Brandon Scott Cordero attempted to have sex with an unidentified girl multiple times between November 2010 and May 2012. The alleged abuse stopped just months before Cordero left for an LDS mission to Iowa, officials said.
Cordero left for his mission in August, but returned home Feb. 4 to face criminal charges.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has released a statement regarding the allegations against Cordero.
"The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints condemns abuse of any kind," said church spokesperson Scott Trotter. "Elder Brandon Scott Cordero was released from his mission and sent home immediately when the charges against him came to light."
Phone calls to the Cordero family by ABC 4 were not immediately returned.
If convicted, Cordero could spend the rest of his life in prison.
