Two Passengers Found With Knives At SLC Airport

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - The veritable cache of restricted weapons continues to flow through Salt Lake City International Airport. Two passengers with knives in their possession were discovered on Thursday, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) said.

One passenger, ticketed to Philadelphia, was found to be wearing a plastic knife on a string around his neck, concealed beneath his clothing. Another, headed for Los Angeles, had a knife inside of his carry-on luggage. Both knives are prohibited by federal law from being carried aboard U.S. aircraft.

The passenger with the knife around his neck told security officials it was for his personal protection. Screening agents spotted the knife using the Advanced Imaging Technology body scanner, which is designed to detect metallic and non-metallic items on a passenger.

The passenger with the knife in his carry-on bag was cited on a state charge, the TSA said.

The knives found Thursday are the latest in a long line of weapons incidents at Salt Lake City International Airport in 2013. Only the night before, a passenger headed to California was caught with a handgun in his carry-on bag. It was the tenth firearm detected by agents at Salt Lake City's airport this year. Just 20 firearms were detected in all of 2012.

The TSA seeks to remind passengers that all firearms and sharp objects are prohibited from being carried or stored in carry-on luggage. Some restricted items may be carried in checked baggage, however. (Click here for a list of prohibited carry-on items)

Doesn't matter guys. Carrying those items on an aircraft is not legal. Doesn't matter if they are forgotten (doubtful) or intentional. One of the guys had it concealed underneath his clothes hanging around his neck. Doubt he forgot about that. You can't do it for the same reason you can't take guns into police buildings, elementary schools and courtrooms.

Clipper has a good point: What % of those people would have committed a terroristic act if they hadn't been caught by the screeners? Why is it a crime to FORGET that your handgun was in your carry-on? How does that put the public in danger? I bet the passengers on the planes that were crashed into the Twin Towers were WISHING that they had a forgotten gun in their carry-ons. Think how many lives could have been SAVED on 9/11 if a few of the good guys had handguns in their carry-ons.
