OGDEN, Utah (AP) - The Weber County sheriff's office is asking eight Ogden-area cities to pay more for contracted police services.
Sheriff Terry Thompson says the unincorporated county and the eight contract cities consume about half of the department's budget, but provide only a quarter of the funding.
He says contract costs have been adjusted slightly over the past decade, but haven't kept pace with increased service costs.
The Standard-Examiner of Ogden reports officials in Farr West, Hooper, Huntsville, Marriott-Slaterville, Plain City, Uintah, Washington Terrace and West Haven have until March 31 to decide on new contracts or find police services elsewhere.
County officials have been working with individual cities to negotiate new contract fees. Depending on the city, the increases could be as high as $500,000 or as low as $3,800.
