SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) -- Former Utah gubernatorial candidate has been announced as a new mission president for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Peter Cooke will serve as new mission president in North Washington D.C.

Cooke ran against Governor Herbert in the 2012 elections. "

He is a retired 2-Star Major General in the U.S. Army Reserves.

He will begin his mission in July.
