"The fault lies with the National Government that has set up a scheme worthy of Bernie Madoff." -Senator Mark Madsen
SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - A Utah state legislator is comparing the Federal Government to swindler Bernie Madoff and actually accusing the Feds of running a Ponzi scheme.

This jaw dropping comment came during a sharp Capitol exchange Monday.

The lawmakers had been debating the merits of Senate Concurrent Resolution 3.

This resolution reminds the U.S. Government about the 10th Amendment, an amendment dealing with the limits of federal power.

Towards the end of the debate, Senator Mark Madsen essentially said Uncle Sam is a swindler.

Madsen said, "The fault lies with the National Government that has set up a scheme worthy of Bernie Madoff."

Bernie Madoff - for those who have forgotten - ran, perhaps, the biggest Ponzi scheme in history.

He bilked investors out of billions of dollars and was sentenced to 150 years in prison.

Senator Madsen went on to say, "That kind of inter-generational Ponzi scheme is a disgrace and it's the fault of the National Government."

And with that,  Resolution 3 passed.

Later, though, even the measure's sponsor was scratching his head about Madsen and Madoff.

ABC 4 asked, "One of the senators compared the Federal Government to kind of a Ponzi scheme and Madoff. Do you agree with that?

Sen. Stuart Adams replied, “I am not sure what he was talking about."

Mmmm, let me think. Thomas Jefferson's opinion vs emstisme and that drive-by history lesson. Whatever his opinion of a Democracy might be, the opinions of the founders were quite clear, and they deliberately did not set our nation to be one. I realize that people who have been working hard to subvert the Founders' original intention for years, and have made it so people who want my compliance with their self-serving socialist programs, can coerce me to go along with such nonsense as social security and inept publlic schools to the tune of thousands of hours of my life and all the money that I earned thereby that I cannot use for what I see fit, are convinced that Democracy is just peachy and that is the way it should be. You are dead wrong. You are not protecting minorities. I don't want your lousy programs and I am stuck with them. We did have a safeguard. It consisted of The Constitution and representatives whose job it is to protect my life, liberty and posession of my hard-earned property to use to the ends of my happiness and to do the same for every other individual - to each his own. It was never to lord over us and tell us what we can and cannot do and how and when, and make us take our medicine and steal what others covet and hand it to them. That is exactly what Thomas Jefferson was talking about.

@emstisme: Thomas Jefferson: "A democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where fifty-one percent of the people may take away the rights of the other forty-nine." The word democracy means rule by the people. "Patrick Henry" below is exactly right. In a Democracy (big D) it is a form of government where the majority sets the rules. In contrast, a democracy (little d) usually refers to a democratic process at work. A Republic in contrast to a Democracy, is a government of law, specifically in our case, the Constitution. The U.S. is governed by law to which all citizens are subject. We have a democratic method for amending that law, but we are not a Democracy. Unfortunately our children are being taught that we are a Democracy as that became the buzzword of the socialist progressives in the early 1900's when they found the American public had no stomach for the word socialist and the agenda that came with it. Thus they changed their language and set about to hijack the education system to make Democracy a palatable word for the public to accept their doctrine of equality. I am disappointed but not suprised that ABC4(Chris) would undermine a serious and complicated discussion. I applaud Senator Madsen for taking the initiative to address the impact of federal health care legislation on the citizens of Utah.

Madison is right, but the real question is why does Vanocur choose to misrepresent him and distort the facts? Its common knowledge that the media has a liberal bias, but that bias doesn't require them to be dishonest. That is a choice they make. A choice Chris made on this story. Thank heavens for fox news and talk radio who clean up after the media takes a dump on common sense and the constitution of the United States.

If you think Bernie ran a big scam, you should check out Amway, as Amway also screws anything that moves: Amway is a scam, and here's why, they pay out as little money as they can get away with, so they support the higher level IBOs ripping off their downline via the tool scam. As a result, about 99% of IBOs operate at a net loss, while the top 1% make several TIMES more from their Amway tool scam than from the Amway products. Read about it on my blog, I suggest you start here: Google "Amway the rest of the story" and forward the information to everyone you know, so they don't get scammed.

Equating the federal government to a Ponzi scheme is not fair to Mr. Ponzi, at least his "investors" had a choice. I’m sure Mr. Vanoker thought he was being clever but he just reminded me why I seldom watch channel 4.

I don't always agree with Senator Madsen (me being more conservative) but this time I think he was being polite...I'd have said they operate more like the mafia. They steal our money and offer us "protection" (from them) if we keep paying it. Give Senator Madsen a standing ovation!!!
