SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - Utah Democrats want their money back.
The Democrats paid $5,000 dollars for state redistricting documents.
But now, the Democratic State Chairman says Republicans were playing political games and he's written a letter asking for a full refund.
Jim Dabakis told ABC 4,
"They took our five thousand dollars and gave us back garbage."
"Garbage" is how Democratic State Chair Jim Dabakis describes the one box of redistricting documents his party was given.
Dabakis wanted to see what legislators were saying to each other about new political boundaries.
Instead, Dabakis claims, he was given useless papers that were publicly available,
"It was clearly a game. It was clearly a trick and they were disingenuous in giving us the documents they did. So, the least they can do is give us our five grand."
And in a letter obtained exclusively by ABC 4, Dabakis tweaks the legislature.
He says won't ask for interest on his five thousand dollar payment,
"With the economy the way it is, we are willing to forgo the interest."
Now, Dabakis admits he's not likely to get his money back.
But he says he's trying to make a point: that Republicans should have given him the documents he wanted and for the price he requested.
Dabakis says,
"It falls upon the Democratic Party, sometimes, to speak out and say the emperor has no clothes. And, frankly, the emperor is sitting out there pretty naked."
Now, ABC 4 also asked for the two other boxes of documents, the ones Democrats requested but the state wants ten thousand dollars for.
We still haven't heard back on our request.
