SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - It was a day of goodbyes Saturday for families of the 889th Transportation Detachment. The convoy and equipment movement unit is deploying to Afghanistan to support “Operation Enduring Freedom”.

“We’re a movement control team so we'll be going up to Afghanistan to withdraw the troops,” said Spc. Hansen.

A send-off ceremony for the 20 soldiers was held at the Uchida Army Reserve Center. It's Spc. Hansen's first time deploying. His older brother, who has served in Iraq, is seeing him off.

“It's hard because I know what he's going to go through, I stood in his boots,” said Bryant Hansen Jr. brother deploying a lot of respect for him.”

The soldiers will be deployed almost year and that means a big adjustment for their families back home.

“We'll be able to Skype as much as we can to stay in communication,” said Joseph Raines, Movement Officer.

The last time this unit deployed was to Kuwait back in 2004.
