MAGNA, Utah (ABC 4 News) - A teenage girl is in critical condition after she was struck by a car while walking to school.
The incident happened shortly after 7:00 a.m. near 8550 West and 2700 South.
"It was terrifying for everybody to see," said Brandon Foulger who was driving along 2700 South when the accident happened. " I turned my blinker on so she could cross and that's when the car hit her."
Captain Clint Smith with the Unified Fire Authority says medical crews responded after someone came to the fire station to get help.
Lt. Don Hutson with the Unified Police Department says the teen was in a crosswalk when she was struck by the car. The girl was thrown nearly 100 feet and suffered severe injuries.
"It amazes me," said Lt. Hutson. "I mean we're not talking about freeway speeds but it amazes me the force."
Lt. Hutson said the teen was in the crosswalk when she was hit by the eastbound car.
"The sun wasn't a factor because it wasn't up yet," said Lt. Hutson. "We were noticing earlier that there was still some frost on the car so we're looking at that."
A medical helicopter was called to the scene and transported the teen to University Hospital in Critical Condition.
The incident is under investigation, and we'll bring you the latest information as it becomes available.
The school principal at Broadbank Jr. High said the student was 14-year old Macala Holloway who is in the ninth grade.
