Taylorsville, Utah (ABC 4 News) --Update: the deceased suspect in the officer involved shooting was Josue Luid Rodriquez-Castro. He was 32 years old.
A domestic situation turned deadly outside of a state government building Thursday morning, when police gunfire killed a knife-wielding suspect.
A barrage of gunfire was heard outside the Workforce Services building in Taylorsville shortly before 9 a.m. Unified Police Department Sheriff Jim Winder says the 32-year-old suspect was trying to cut a woman with a knife and refused to put it down.
"He was ordered to do so and the man appeared to be assaulting the woman," said Winder.
Authorities said the couple were sitting inside of a large SUV in the Workforce Services parking lot. When the man continued to try and stab the woman, an officer shot the suspect.
The woman was unharmed by the gunfire, but Sheriff Winder said she did have several lacerations on her. Witnesses heard the woman screaming, asking "is he dead? Is he dead?" An officer attempted to perform CPR on the suspect, but he died at the scene.
Officials said the woman's family received a phone call from her earlier, claiming her boyfriend was becoming violent with her. Her family then called dispatch to notify police.
Winder said his deputies arrived at the parking lot and approached the man, knowing that this could be a dangerous situation. Courtney Madsen, who works nearby, looked outside her office window and saw some of the confrontation.
"The officer was telling him to 'put it down, put it down,'" Madsen said. "Then I heard lots of shots, one right after another."
Officials say that the officer who shot the suspect probably saved the woman's life. Authorities did not immediately release the suspect's name.
